(Junior) Transition Consultant

At Kalavasta we work on discovering and realising sustainable equilibria. We develop insights and models that enable people and organisations to make changes towards a more stable society. Our primary focus is on the energy transition, although we have also become active in the agri-food-nature transition.
Recently, we have worked on ‘Routes naar Realisatie’, in which we calculated the impact of various climate packages for the Dutch coalition formation. Additionally, we created an electricity infrastructure model, in which all cables in the Netherlands are modelled to provide insights into the current and future electricity grid.
We are looking to expand our team with a (junior) consultant who will work on a variety of projects, collaborating with our external partners and clients. Your activities may include but are not limited to developing models, conducting (scientific) research, meeting and/or discussing with technical experts and clients, and attending conferences.
Izzy Cronin, Transition Consultant at Kalavasta: "As a junior transition consultant at Kalavasta no day will look the same. You'll work on 2-4 projects a year, each with its own focus and approach. These might range from writing reports on pathways to net-zero by 2040 (supporting organisations like Greenpeace in their climate action), to designing CO₂ pricing mechanisms that balance decarbonisation in the greenhouse horticulture sector without unfairly burdening farmers, to building online webapps that model how the energy transition will be financed. This variety means you need to be a fast learner - from hosting workshops and diving deep into Excel models. You'll get the opportunity to work with diverse clients, each bringing different perspectives and challenges to the energy transition. The role requires strong time management skills and the ability to work independently – but always with the guidance and support of a colleague. You'll gain responsibility early, grow in confidence and get to work with and learn from some absolutely brilliant people."
Profile
- have very strong quantitative skills (not necessarily a quantitative degree)
- have a university degree, with a strong track record (e.g. grades, internships, dissertation) or several years working experience in a comparable field
- are proficient in Dutch or English, and at least a B1 level in the second language. (Reports and meetings with clients are predominantly in Dutch)
- are allowed to work in the Netherlands
- are a curious, open, and critical thinker - thinking further and beyond
- naturally pick up new things quickly
- can work both independently and in a team on intellectual challenges
- are a strong communicator both verbally and in writing
- focus on key issues and maximising impact
- are profoundly motivated by our mission, which manifests itself in your personal life and career

We welcome applications from diverse backgrounds, although a background in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) is a strong plus. We work mostly with topics relating to the climate transition but do not require previous experience in the field.
